WHAT ARE NUTRACEUTICALS?
Nutraceuticals can be generally described as ingredients from natural sources which may be incorporated into food, capsules or other medicinal formats, and which have been demonstrated to have a physiological benefit that provides health benefits beyond basic nutritional functions and/or reduce the risk of chronic disease. Dietary supplements are products intended to supplement the diet which are ingested in dosage form, which may contain a nutraceutical.
WHAT IS HYPERCHOLESTEROLAEMIA?
An unusually high level of blood cholesterol. Commonly induced by poor dietary and lifestyle habits but also in some cases caused by genetic factors - a familial defect in lipoprotein metabolism.
A total cholesterol level of over 200 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter) is known to be a risk factor for heart disease. Below 200mg/dl is desirable, 200 to 239 mg/dl is considered borderline high, over 240 mg/dl is considered high.
WHAT IS GRAS?
Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS): A regulatory category created for a group of food additives that are exempted from the more rigorous FDA requirements. A substance is accorded GRAS status, if it is generally recognized by experts qualified by scientific training and experience to evaluate its safety, as having been adequately shown through scientific procedures or experience based on common use in food to be safe under the conditions of its intended use.
WILL REDUCOL™ INTERFERE WITH MY SPECIAL DIET?
No, Reducol™ has no nutritive, caloric or fat values and is not metabolized by the body. Therefore it will have no effect on a special diet; whether it is low fat, weigh reduction, cholesterol reducing, vegetarian, wheat/gluten-free or diabetic.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS WITH USING PRODUCTS CONTAINING REDUCOL™ OR PLANT PHYTOSTEROLS?
Yes. Reducol™ has been developed for people who want to lower their cholesterol. Lowering cholesterol can help maintain a healthy heart. Seek a doctor's advice if you are already taking cholesterol-reducing medication.
Cholesterol lowering products may not be nutritionally appropriate for people with special dietary needs, e.g. pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five.
Reducol™ should be used as part of a balanced and varied diet, including fruit and vegetables, to aid the cholesterol reducing effect.
To obtain optimum cholesterol reducing effects, consume 1.8g of Reducol™ per day. Eating more does not provide additional cholesterol lowering benefits.
CAN I USE REDUCOL™ IF I AM TAKING PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION?
While we have not conducted any studies of the effect(s), if any, of Reducol™ interactions with prescription drugs, Reducol™ is a combination of plant sterols and stanols which have been found to have no known interactions with drugs including hormone drugs, contraceptives and antibiotics. If you are taking any prescription medications (including but not limited to: cholesterol lowering drugs such as statins, Bile acid sequestrants, nicotinic acid derivatives, fibrates) we strongly recommend you consult a doctor/physician or health care specialist.
WILL TAKING PRODUCTS CONTAINING REDUCOL™ BE SUFFICIENT TO REDUCE MY CHOLESTEROL TO SAFE LEVELS?
Reducol™ has been clinically proven to significantly reduce cholesterol levels. However individual results will vary and are influenced by a person's age, sex, body weight and family history but also lifestyle choices such as diet, physical activity/exercise habits and smoking. To give the patient the most chance of benefit, we strongly recommend that any person taking Reducol™ or phytosterols seek professional counsel on healthy lifestyle choices, such as a reduced fat diet, exercise and no smoking. Patients may have cholesterol levels (>240mg/dL), which exceed the range treatable by phytosterols and call for more potent therapies such as prescription anti-dyslipidemic drugs. In EVERY case, whether you believe you have high cholesterol or not, it is recommended that qualified medical advice be obtained and a cholesterol test be undertaken to determine the most appropriate form of treatment for you.
